Week 15 - Last Change

These are the last days of class and here we are, hopefully smarter then we were when we started.  I know I have learned a great deal in this class.  Online was a great way to take this class for me because I could learn as everyone else wrote about their experiences, and hopefully they from mine, and didn't have to wait until the next class to ask my question (which inevitably turned into another question once I applied the knowledge).  I'm still in the same space in Web 2.0 but I've added a bit to my arsenal.

There are a lot of things I was scared about trying in this class.  I live in my own little computer literate box that I'm comfortable in...Lisa made me break down a wall or two.  I learned I can do this, with a little guidance the internet is not such a scary place.

I will be taking two classes, haven't signed up yet so I need to get on that, communications and global perspective.  I'm working towards my associates then will work on the bachelors.

I hope to make more posters, I already use picmonkey and will continue to use that, Animoto is awesome and will be used.  The animated GIF's will probably not happen again but you never know.

I had a great time in this class.  There was a lot of positive people pushing their way through and making it to the end.  Lisa, you've been wonderful.  From your hand holding in the beginning, encouragement throughout the semester, and MM-elt down...Thank you for everything, I feel empowered through this class.

Week 14 - Remix

I have to agree with Kirby Ferguson:  Emprace the Remix!!!

I think all ideas stem from something that exists.  Whether it is to make it better or it's a new thing (song, product, invetion) taken from an old idea.

Lawrence Lessing: Remix.  Copyright idea's are outdated. Remixing = taking work and building on and adding value.  I'm sure there are deeper issues with this but it sounds simple enough, if you take something and add value to it it's then yours.  The original made money, you make money...all's good!!

Love Steven Colbert!!

week 13 - Generation "F"

Accusations of pregnancy for ex-partners, "complaining" about work &/or coworkers, finding  out someone you thought was a really good friend is 5 months pregnant and didn't tell you...

These are just a few of the ways that social media has impeded my workplace.  As none of these are good things and the "complaining" about work was met with disciplinary action, the impact has not all been good.

There are some good things that have come to the workplace as a result of social media, we are working on setting up a telemedicine clinic where PCP providers can consult via computer with pictures to specialist.  Some of the (#4 leaders serve rather than preside) consulting/learning for this process has happened through social media on the web.

As I read the article I found myself thinking that in the right environment (many places could be the right environment) web-based social values and generation "F" could work wonders.  No, they may not feel at home in a cubical but what if the cubical had a computer and, basically, as social network for the corporation.  Think of the ideas (#1 all ideas compete on an equal footing), the solutions to problems, the production that could happen when everyone is (#8: power comes from sharing information) putting information in and taking information out just to put more information in..

My partner used facebook to find a home for a very special four legger that had been hit by a car and was paralized.  We took him in and set him up with wheels and through his facebook page were able to find the perfect home for him. ( The magic of Marco ) I'm hoping that link works for those of you with a facebook account and want to take a look.

I think that web-based social values can be both good & bad.  There is a time and place for it.  Our clinic is patient based, the majority being patients coming in in person, this is not the time and place for social media.  There could be a place in our organization for web-based social values as talked about in the article.  Development and planning as we grow as an organization.  I think this may have helped prior to implementing our electronic health records and perhaps made it a smoother transition.  I think most organizations could benefit from Generation "F" if they are given the chance to work their way.

Week 12 - The Long Trail

I never knew there was an official name for this.  I use this all the time on Amazon.  When I order books for my kindle I will order something known to me then search through the "other people that ordered this also ordered".  I have found many books that I would never have read if not for this.

I also use this on other sites when ordering toys for my son, clothes or gifts for anyone.  I choose something they have and know they like and look at the suggestions that come up.  I think this is a great feature.  I really never gave much thought to the overall effect of bringing about older or obscure, books, music or movies.  I think people, publishers etc, would be trying to figure out how to get their products attached to the popular items to advertise them, so to speak.  I wonder if this is happening and how that would change the data we look at?

Week 11 - Podcasts

I am not a fan!!!

Okay, I got that out of my system.  Let me start by saying I am an INTROVERT (I learned this in my HRM class this semester).  I reenergize with quiet alone time (QUIET).  I work in a hospital with over 20 people in my office and another 15 in our other office on the opposite side of the hall 2 floors up.  There are patients, employees and volunteers in the hallways if I walk from one site to the other.  I have a 5 year old a partner and 2 dogs (also neighbors that like to socialize)  I do enjoy all this, but...I do not need nor want anyone talking at me from or about a podcast.  Now, to be fair, this has nothing to do with the podcast and everything to do with me (don't hate the podcast).

I thought I had it figured out this week, I always struggle with the research part of this class.  I downloaded the podcast app to my cell and was all set to listen on my way to and from work.  Well, after downloading the app on Sunday evening, I forgot to listen Monday.  Tuesday on the way home I remembered to look it up and set one to start before I left work, forgot to hit play when I got to the car.  Wednesday I did listen on the way to work, for about 1/10th of a mile.  All I kept thinking was "why is this person talking at me".  Wednesday I was determined to find one I could listen to.  I found Mighty Mommy's and I got through it. I guess after you get through the first chit-chat or non-scripted stuff they actually do say some things.

I will admit I did better with the video podcasts because I had something to watch while I listened but still not a huge fan.

Now we know!!!

Take it on the Road - Week 10

Here is my Take it on the road video.  It took a couple of tries to get it but this is where it ended up.  I used my Iphone to take the video clips and iMovie to create the video.  The hard part came after I had the video set up in iMovie I couldn't remember the next step, so I played around with it until I was completely frustrated then went to fold laundry.  When I came back I remembered we had to post it to youtube first then take the embeded code and put it into our blog...I win!!!

Vlogging week 09

This week we created vlogs to post on our blogs.  It was an interesting process.  I had a really hard time  picking a topic.  When I finally came up with something on Wed. I was called by the school nurse and picked up my son with a fever.  Life...always challenging.  So my assignment is late but my son is feeling better.

Taking the video was not hard, I chose my Ipad which I'm not sure was the best choice because of the weight but did offer the best resolution.  It didn't turn out to shaky so I'm happy with that.  Then came to using my Imove which I have never used...watched the tutorial...but it still took about 30 minutes to figure out how to get the video to the imovie folder.  There was "dead space" in the video where Jen was just filling the feeder and I was didn't have anything to say so I edited out a section in the middle.  I added a title page and credit page, again it took awhile to figure out how to put in what I wanted it to say, but again...I won.  The rest was okay, I got it onto youtube and now the final test...can I get it to my blog.

Enjoy!!

Week 08 - Reflections on Hans Rosling's presentation

His presentation was great!!  I would sit throught that and probably any other presentation he offered even if it was on a subject I didn't know about.

He used his slides to prove his points.  He knew his material even though he looked to be reading most of it from a card.  The uses of moving grafts was good.  I have never seen that in a presentation before.  I'm rambling, let me get my list of what Lisa wants from us:

He uses technology to prove his point.  You can't argue with the graft telling you the information.  He explained his grafts and the changes as they happened again to prove his points.  The only slides he used with words were to highlight his discussion, it wasn't his discussion.  He put the countries up and the stats of students as he presented them.

I like the moving grafts.  They were fasinating, I will have to look at that as an option for a talk, even though I don't know what I would use it for.

week 07 - Copyright and the Kindle

(I had to change up the font as we are talking about that as well this week)

As I was reading the NYTimes article I started to get a little offended for authors.  How could we just take their ability and "steal" it creating poverty in the industry.  I got to the end where a lawyer at the Electronic Frontier Foundation warns that "parents everywhere should be on the lookout for legal papers haling them into court for reading to their kids." and I couldn't believe he would belittle the authors guild for fighting for what they had earned.  The second time I read it I started thinking, if you bought the book you have (theoretically) paid royalties on the book.  Does it matter if you have a computer voice stating the words instead of reading them off the page?  (although I must question the listening ability of anyone who, voluntarily, can actually stand that computer voice talking to them much less reading a book).

I then go to our second article from the legal match law blog.  I found this blog answered some of the questions I came up with in the first article.  You've paid the royalities when you bought the book.  Then there is the optomistic thought that this will continue to escalate as new technologies come into play.

I don't blame the authors guild for trying to get money they feel they deserve.  However, I think they should look at the big picture, pick your battles and fight the ones that need to be fought.  Perhaps this has started now because of upcoming technology and they are just setting the tone for the industry to pay attention to their rights as they come out with new options.

week 06- reflections on copyright and street art

First let me start with the videos on plagarism...simple (and a bit goofy) but informative.  The video giving the instruction as to the proper way to cite the work was helpful for me.  I know this all needs to be done but to be honest I have never been that diligent when writting a paper.  I take information form multiple sources, I have a tendency to "jot" down the thought within the information I'm reading and use it in my work.  I neglect to write down where the thoughts came from so I can cite them in my work...I will do better, I will do better, I will do better.  Maybe it will sink in.

As for Shepard Fairey.  After reading the information, going out there to see how easy it is to get an image of Obama (extremely) I have to say I'm glad I'm not in a position where I need to know these laws better than I do.  One could say that as this is Fairey's lifes work he should have known the steps that should have been taken or should have someone close to him to help protect him (a manager of sorts).  On the other hand it sounds like he had no idea this would take off the way it did and that the picture would be as popular as it turned out to be.

As far as the AP goes I think there might have been an alterior motive to this whole thing.  Were they trying to send a message to all that have been using their photos without permission?  Were they upset with the candidate of choice? Is it something against Fairey himself?  Although I'm beleive I would be upset if it was my photo and the manipulation of said was bringing in money for someone and I was not getting any credit.  I just don't think I would bring it to court...too much time and money!!

week 05 - Are you a phone photographer?

The answer would be definitely!!!  A couple of years ago I bought an Ipod for my partner for Christmas.  The intent was for new music for the ride to work.  The digital camera has been collecting dust ever since.  She loves it!!!  When we were looking at upgrading phones we went with the Iphone (an Ipod touch that you can talk on).  This is great, take videos, pictures and share them at the touch of a button (I think a touch of another button and they go to facebook...) easy!!  Great pictures as well.  My sister-in-law is a professional photographer...she uses her Iphone constantly.  My mother-in-law asked her one day if she ever put "that stupid phone down" her response was "you mean my camera".  She is constantly taking pictures with it.  You can get great real life candides because people just act like themselves and are so used to seeing the phones they are not as guarded as they are around say a 35 mm.

Week 04 - Creative Commons

Creative commons and Magnatune...what a great idea!!!

In the interview with John Buckman he states that there was a ton of music out there that was not getting published, and a lot of genres of music that were getting lost.  Magnatunes is doing a great service to musicians and society alike.  I signed up for their free trial and have been listening to some of there stuff.  It's great.  The fact that they can do this and encourage artists to put out music in a way that gives them the right to make decisions about how it is used I'm sure if a relief and miracle to the artists that are struggling to be heard.

Creative commons seems to work in the same manor, they just work with all kinds of artists, musicians & writters.  Get it out there.  Let them be heard and give them a chance at their dreams.

week 03- 5000 days

"It's amazing and we're not amazed"

I think that quoat from Kevin Kelly was spot on!!  Most of us don't give a thought to the growing web, it has become an expectation rather than a wonder (speaking in my small corner of the world).  The intent of the web was "TV only better" impossible, but with that model humans were able to create something, shall we say, unstoppable.  Kevin stated many times that things were impossible in practice but not in practice...Wikipedia.  To listen to his talk opened my eyes more to the magnitude of of what has been created in a relatively short period of time.  "We have to get better at believing in the impossible" completely true as we have experienced and will continue to be amazed with the progress.

The "one machine", "running uniterupted", I was having flashes of "big brother".  I can't really justify that as the one machine will be watching our every move but that the one machine will know everything about us and put that information out there and accessible to (anyone?).

When he spoke of being codependent on the one machine, I was thinking we have that now.  Can you tell me your parents phone numbers?  When was the last time you looked at a paper map for directions?  When was the last time you left the house without your cell phone?  I watch the people I work with (Most are a good 10 years younger than I am) and wonder how they would have maintained relationships without the web!!

Fasten your seatbelts everyone....this is a fast moving ride!!!

Me in the cloud!

Am I in the cloud?...Here I am.  My day starts early and I go to the computer to participate on my online classes.  I go to work and work on a scheduling program through the web and Electronic Health Records.  I usually send a text or two during the day and use my cell phone on my drive home from work.  Then as some point in the evening we go to you tube to watch something my 5 year old can't wait to see.  Then it's back to school online and reading from my kindle before sleep.  Yes, I am in the cloud!!

The AT&T commercial was great...I remember them.  That stuff is all happening.  I borrow books and read them online.  We pay tolls by just driving through, although most of them you do need to slow down for.  With Facetime and Skype along with (I'm sure there are more out there) others that are unknown to me we can video chat with friends and family or attend a meeting when we are in another location.  Those are just a few of the things that were fortold in the commercial!
